You can load it up through the entire length of the cable unless you decide to re-route the cable and skip the angle drive, then you have to keep the lube away from the speedo head because it will foul it up. I replaced the cable with a new one by a company called Pioneer (from Rock Auto). I also replaced the plastic gear in the trans. I did not lube the new cable. The old cable had a removable insert.Clean with solvent. Then apply the new lube to a few inches at a time as you thread it back in. Make sure it's seated into the trans and then reattach the cable assembly back into the speedo. Don't over tighten, infact leave it a thread or two loose till you get a few miles, then snug it down. 1.I used to use MoPar speedo cable lube, don't know if its still available though. GM and Ford probably have their own version of it. Another alternative would be a thin film of Lubriplate 105 Motor assembly lube.
