You should only have one screw to adjust the fuel mixture.the other one is to set the idle speed.its sounds like you have an air leak around the carb or being that it sat for so long the slow jet circuit may still be plugged up.I would try cleaning it again and blowing it out with compressed air. A quick way to tell is to tape off a portion of the snorkel and see if it runs better. You may have to restrict more air to make it run better. And sometimes its the other way around and your snorkel is already to restrictive.One way to check on this is to set the engine to TDC, then set the clearance for .006" like you have been doing, then turn the engine over slowly by hand a little each way. If you find that the clearance goes to .000" on one side of TDC, then the valve timing is set wrong. This is just a theory, but worth checking out.

Then adjust the fuel screw when hot. Your problem with the high idle is in the slow/pilot jet or the air bleed for the same circuit or the fuel screw is out of adjustment.
